Derek Sloan was officially named as the head coach of the West Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball program on Sept. 15, 2021. He spent two seasons as an assistant coach on previous WVWC head coach Nick Patella's staff and was appointed as the interim head coach on Aug. 10, 2021.
In 2018, Sloan served as an assistant basketball coach at Culver Military Academy in Culver, Ind. The Cleveland, Ohio native was a member of the Cleveland State University men's basketball team from 2013-2018 as he earned his bachelor's degree in Business Administration.
Coach Hoffman will be entering his second season at West Virginia Wesleyan after a long career of teaching and coaching. His most recent stop was at Garrett College, a JUCO in Maryland from 2017 to 2023. Previously he had spent 34 years teaching and coaching high school basketball in West Virginia.
Coach Hoffman has brought a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Wesleyan basketball program. He received his undergraduate degree at Fairmont State College (University) and his master’s degree from WVU. He retired from teaching and coaching at both East Fairmont High School (13 years) and Morgantown High School (21 years), and during his time with the Mohigans, helped lead the program to one of its finest decades in the history of the school, culminating with a state championship. During his time as a JV coach, his teams had a record of 428-70. While at Garrett College he helped lead the Varsity Men's program to a 76-35 record. In 2020 he helped lead the Laker Basketball program to its best finish ever with a trip to the national final four before losing in the final seconds in the semifinal game, culminating in a fourth-place national ranking. He helped develop all region players Zakeem Davis (2018), D'Monte Brown (2020) and All-American 2nd team, Cameron Selders (2020) and All-American first team, Malik Whitaker (2020).
Last season as a Bobcat, Coach Hoffman helped lead a resurgent WVWC men's basketball program to competitive basketball. In doing so, he helped guide All-conference selection Deiker Padrino to one of the best years in the history of the program. Deiker finished in the top ten nationally as a three point shooter and led the conference. He recently signed with the Gaiteros Del Zulia in South America as he begins his pro career.
